It was with great interest that we read the commentary written by Davis and Carr. 1 The authors provided an exceptionally useful review of naloxone dispensing laws and regulations across all 50 states. Despite the opportunity to access naloxone being almost universal, information about payment for such access is still limited.
Since 2014, the use of naloxone autoinjectors has increased greater than 500% and has reached an out-of-pocket cost that is virtually unattainable for most. 2 Several states provide naloxone through their medical assistance programs, but not everyone who would benefit from naloxone is covered under Medicaid. 3-5 What about those who have no insurance or are covered by commercial insurers?
