Selective death of upper and lower motor neurons in the motor cortex, brainstem, and spinal
cord is the hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a neurodegenerative
disorder with an important genetic and phenotypic variability. In the majority of patients, the
cause of the disease is unknown. As a consequence one can only try to slow down or halt
