Abstract
Background: Genital wart (condyloma accuminata) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STI) which is highly contagious. Human papilloma virus (HPV) subtypes 6 and 11 are responsible for this condition in about 90% of cases. Transmission of this virus occurs via direct contact with skin and sexual contact. The objective of this study was to determine living condition and involved anatomic areas of 206 women with genital warts. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 206 women who presented to our university dermatology clinic and for whom the diagnosis of genital wart was made were included. They noted the warts by themselves or by their sexual partner. Written informed consent was obtained from the patients to participate in this study. A checklist was designed which included variables namely living condition, age, and anatomic areas affected by genital warts.
Results: Mean age of the patients was 31 years. About 39.2% of the cases had educational level of high school diploma or higher. Illiteracy was detected in five percent of the population. About 65.3% of the cases were married and 34.6% was single. Economic level of 68.1% of the cases was middle, 12.3% was low, and 19.6% was high. About 51.5% was housewives, 13.1% was self-employed, 15.7% was governmental clerks, 15.3% was unemployed, and the lowest percentage (4.6%) was seen in university students. Peri-anal area (31.1%) and labia minora (38.1%) were the most commonly affected anatomic areas.
