Advanced imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), are readily available to most specialist referral hospitals and also increasingly to a growing number of first‐opinion/general practice veterinary hospitals. Despite this increased availability, MRI remains an expensive and complicated diagnostic tool. This article describes an approach to MRI of the brain in small animal patients and aims to provide an insight into its use and interpretation, to help practitioners understand the benefits and limitations for clinical practice.
