Much has been said of late about the problem of modernism—what it is that is missing from the present scientific worldview. Modernism, with its stunning successes in science and technology, with its engineering triumphs and excursions into the solar system, with its clever exploitation of land and water resources, and medical miracles, once seemed as if it could promise food, health, and a happy life of space exploration and ad-venture for all ofus earthly humans. Modernism also seemed to promise, for those who cared about it, final insight into the nature of reality, and eventual control over all of the forces of the universe.
