One night of enforced sleep loss significantly decreases depressive symptoms in approximately 40%–60% of depressed patients and can be administered as an adjunctive treatment to ongoing medications. 3 Although SDT is relatively safe, there is a slight risk of switches into hypomania/mania that is comparable to or lower than that associated with conventional antidepressants. Mood stabilizers can quickly reverse symptoms in order to restore euthymia. 4–6
