Abstract
Compared to older adults, adolescents and young adults are at higher risk for acquiring sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) for a number of reasons, including: having multiple sexual partners, engaging in unprotected intercourse, and selecting partners who are at higher risk. In this study, descriptive data were gathered and analyzed on the habits, beliefs and knowledge of college students regarding STDs and safer sex. The study also served to discover information sources and communication tactics regarding safer sex and STD prevention. Although students' awareness of STDs was high, their prevention practices were lacking. Behaviorally, consistent condom use among sexually active students was rare. Sexually active students who discussed condom use did not appear to regularly use condoms. For the most part, students were well informed about STDs, but their prevention practices were inconsistent with their high level of knowledge.
