Galanin inhibits food consumption in satiated rats. Discovered relatively recently, galanin is
a 29-amino-acid neuropeptide, not homologous with any other known peptide. Three G-
protein-linked galanin receptor subtypes have been cloned. This review summarizes the
mechanisms by which exogenously administered galanin may stimulate ingestion,
