Summary
Generally, glucocorticoids and non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most famous and widely used medications worldwide as treatment for inflammatory disorders. Nevertheless, NSAIDs are associated with several adverse effects in several organs, such as gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, hepatic, renal, cerebral, and pulmonary complications. As a result, a substitution with anti‐inflammatory activity and less toxicity for tissue needs to be investigated. For centuries, plants have been used as remedies for various diseases. However, the majority of them have not been studied particularly well either chemically or biologically, especially concerning their anti‐inflammatory action. This chapter summarizes numerous available studies about the anti‐inflammatory action of plants and their bioactive compounds in order to provide an overview of medicinal plants as sources of anti‐inflammatory agents. Plants could be potential alternative anti‐inflammatory drugs in treatment of inflammatory diseases to minimize tissue damage and accommodate greater comfort to the patient.
