This report gives details of the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and liver disease
in the adult population, across different social and demographic groups, using self-report
and biological measurements. From blood samples, serum creatinine and cystatin C are
used to estimate the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and from urine, albumin and creatinine

For the first time in HSE, levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in blood samples have been measured. Raised levels of AST or ALT are markers of potential liver damage.
