Physician burnout is a construct as varied as the people it affects. It involves a constellation

Physician burnout is a construct as varied as the people it affects. It involves a constellation of experiences including, but not limited to, moral injury, anxiety, cognitive impairment, and diminished functional capacity (1). Burnout has an insidious onset, catches many physicians by surprise, and can occur at any point in one’s medical career from the early years of training to the later chapters of one’s professional career. Medscape’s 2022 Physician Burnout & Depression Report (2) surveyed 13 000 US physicians across 29 specialties and found that the prevalence of physician burnout ranged from 26% to 60% depending on medical specialty. The overall prevalence of burnout across all specialties was significantly greater among women than among men (the survey respondents selfidentified as male or female) and during the COVID-19 pandemic than in previous years. Radiology, with 49% of survey respondents reporting burnout, was tied in the eighth position (with pediatrics) for medical specialties with the highest degrees of physician burnout. Burnout is a risk factor for mental ill health and can affect interpersonal dynamics in multiple social domains. Burnout is also a risk factor for significant mental illness including major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and substance use, particularly in those with predispositions for these conditions (1, 3). Given these realities, it is important to understand what burnout is and how to recognize it in ourselves and our colleagues. It is also important to consider what we might do both individually and institutionally to mitigate the causes of burnout and best support those experiencing it.
