Abstract
West Sumatra is one of 34 provinces in Indonesia which has the challenge of cultural pluralism. This is characterized by the diversity of social identities, variation of tribes who live in this area, and the global oriented lifestyle. This opinion can be regarded as a character representation of Indonesian society that is varied ranging from homogeneous, heterogeneous, pluralistic up with multicultural. The variations people often become sensitive to the issue of social harmony. But it is not so in West Sumatra. A study conducted five years ago, with the scope of West Sumatra, is still relevant to discuss here, that is the concept of a multicultural society in the Minangkabau community interacting with other cultures, known as “malakok”. This paper will discuss a variety of “malakok” patterns found in the various regions in West Sumatra (Pasaman, Dharmasraya, Solok, and Pesisir Selatan). The finding of this study consisted of f the concept of multicultural as a local wisdom in Minangkabau society which is reflected in the socio-cultural of malakok as a means of integration of immigrant communities with indigenous people. The existence of “Malakok” becomes more obvious with the current government policy called" Back to Nagari". This policy is an attempt to revive the traditional leadership role in the system of public administration in Minangkabau.
