We integrate research on the growth mindset (e.g., Dweck, 2006) and motivated information processing (Kunda, 1990; Nickerson, 1998) to examine the benefits of embracing a growth mindset at work. We focus on how a work-specific growth mindset can broaden an individual’s view of the positive change that they can make at work each day. We argue that on days when individuals participate in a work-specific growth mindset intervention, they will engage in more helping and voice behavior, and subsequently perceive a greater prosocial impact and meaning in life. We also examine the role of trait-level growth mindset and trait resilience as moderators, suggesting that the effects of the work-specific growth mindset intervention will be stronger overall for those higher in trait-level growth mindset, and the effects on voice will be stronger for those higher in trait resilience. We conducted a within-person field experiment utilizing a daily experience sampling approach with employees at a large casino and hotel. Results were largely supportive of our hypotheses; the intervention significantly increased daily helping and downstream perceptions of perceived prosocial impact and meaning in life, and approached significance in increasing voice behaviors. We discuss theoretical and practical implications of these findings.
