Sulfated zirconia was prepared in conditions of optimal acidic properties, namely calcination
at 600° C and with 2 wt% sulfur content. Infrared studies allowed us to identify SO 3 species
by absorption bands at 1390 and 1027 cm− 1. Such a species was found to be very
sensitive to water giving rise with increasing water adsorption to IR bands first at 1368 and
1200 cm− 1 (assigned to adsorbed H 2 SO 4), then at 1320 and 1138 cm− 1 (attributed to
