Abstract
High rise buildings usually make use of large glass surfaces on their façades, which can cause undesired effects in both the buildings and their surroundings, when they are not properly designed. An alternative idea is the use of green façades for energy, environmental and psychological benefits. Scientific studies usually focus on either cost and benefit analysis or energy and environmental effects of green façades. However, the application of green façade brings many problems with it; from the cultivation of plants to the structural design of the building, and tall buildings are especially challenging because of additional wind and dead loads acting on the building. This paper aims to study problems related to the application of high rise green façades from design to construction. In this framework, the effects of green façades on tall buildings of the future will be discussed through the case of “Bosco Verticale” towers, which can be translated as “Vertical Forest”, located in Milan. The façades of these two residential towers contain 480 big and middle range trees, 250 small trees and other plants. This innovative approach creates a new aesthetic language; in addition a new ecological balance is created with the flora, fauna and the users. In conclusion, the utilization of green facades in tall buildings is an innovation that can be applied in many ways, yet the essential considerations are integration with building systems, the new ecological balance, additional loads to the structural system, the growing medium, loading, planting and monitoring of the live plants.
