The emergence of the idea of tropical disease is part of the legacy of European empire-
building in places such as Brazil. Early European witnesses in the tropics believed those
latitudes to be exceptionally healthy, almost a terrestrial paradise. But by the end of the
1700s opinion had changed to a view of tropical environments as naturally debilitating.This

Early European witnesses in the tropics believed those latitudes to be exceptionally healthy, almost a terrestrial paradise. But by the end of the 1700s opinion had changed to a view of tropical environments as naturally debilitating.
This new medical image of the tropics derived especially from three factors:(1) the change in European medical philosophy from humoralism to an emphasis on environmental factors of health;(2) the rise of a new understanding of the" properties of airs"; and (3) increasing Eurocentrism among medical philosophers in the Enlightenment.
