A new investigation on an experimental procedure to perform precise measurements of
straggling in energy loss in polymer foils has been done. The details of the experimental
procedures related to the combination of Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and
transmission techniques are described and discussed. As an example, energy loss and
straggling measurements in the energy range of 1000–3700 keV for protons and deuterons
