Crude oil is the key feedstock for the production of motor fuels and chemicals. Through
refining, chemical building blocks, such as ethene and propene, are produced which serve
as monomers for the production of polyethene and polypropene. However, since the

However, since the beginning of the twenty-first century, crude oil prices have risen from 30 USD per barrel up to almost 140 USD per barrel in June of 2008 as shown in Figure 1-1 [1]. Afterwards the price has dropped dramatically due the economic crisis. A recovery of the oil price was accomplished but due to the increase in supply by the United States, Iraq and Iran and the economic slowdown in China, prices are again historically low.
