If teachers increase the unit time to improve student learning, students will more likely continue to participate in the activity throughout life. To promote student learning, a teacher will need to decide how to provide the information to students. Most teachers will decide on a particular instructional model to use when they are teaching. An instructional model is a “plan or pattern that can be used to shape curriculums (long-term courses of study), to design instructional materials, and to guide instruction in the classroom or other settings”(Joyce & Weil, 1980, p. 1). In other words, an instructional model is a blueprint that a teacher can follow to ensure that the learning materials are provided to students in the best possible way (Metzler, 2005). One instructional model that has been chosen by physical educators is the sport education model (SEM). The purpose of this article is to provide a description of the SEM and how it would be implemented with the sport of bowling in order to promote lifetime engagement.
