A field experiment was conducted in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, to study the
performance of different systems of rice cultivation under various nitrogen levels. The
different systems of rice cultivation were:(i) direct sowing of sprouted seeds under puddled
condition, direct sowing of (ii) sprouted or (iii) dry seeds under unpuddled condition, and (iv)
transplanting of seedlings under unpuddled condition. In plots with puddled soil, 5-cm water
