Mango hoppers are widely distributed in all mango growing regions of the country causing major threat to mango production. Mango orchards are subjected to the attack of several insect pests, among which, hoppers infestation is major yield limiting factor which affects the productivity and quality of mango fruits. The hoppers cause a loss of 20-100% of inflorescence (Haseeb, 2006). The two important species of mango hoppers viz., Amritodus atkinsoni Lethierry, Idioscopus clypealis Lethierry of which A. atkinsoni is the most predominant species in Chhattisgarh. The mango hoppers mainly suck the sap from tender shoots, leaves and inflorescence (Das et al., 1969) which causes panicles shrivel, turn brown and finally fall off (Butani, 1979). Honey dew secreting from hoppers causes sooty mould on the leaves. The affected panicles will not set fruits. The yield loss can be 100% under heavy infestation (Butani, 1979).
Management of hopper incidence on mango is mainly dependent on insecticides (Pena et al., 1998). Although several insecticides have been recommended for managing mango hoppers, many of them are being phased out and therefore the present experiments were conducted to study the efficacy of some new insecticide molecules.
