Evaluation of rumen digesta as a source of plant nutrient in owerri southeast Nigeria was carried out in 2014. The assessment involved the identification of all the Abattoirs in the city, the species of ruminant animals slaughtered, and economic analysis of a rumen digesta enterprise in owerri, imo State Nigeria. The raw data emanating from the study was subjected to statistical analysis for means, percentages and gross margin analysis. The result showed that on the average a total of 65160, 28080 and 13320 of Cow, Goat and Sheep respectively are slaughtered annually within the study area. These yield about 2,952,720 kg per annum with a contribution of 233,490, 7020 and 5550 from Cow, Goat and Sheep respectively per month. This amount translates to 59054 bags of 50kg each and an economic return of N35, 432,640 gross income. At N5, 905,400.00 annual handling costs, a rumen digesta enterprise can return a profit of N29, 527,240.00. The amount is equivalent to the annual salary of 49 employees at a monthly salary of N50. 000.00. Rumen digesta within the study area is abundant enough for farming with the potential to provide employment to young school leavers. Rumen digesta during decomposition has the ability to release plant nutrients that replenish soil nutrients, provide cementing agents that bind soil particles together, improve on soil physical properties and generally increase crop yield. Rumen digesta can comfortably provide the needed manure for organic farming. The environment will be better, cleaner and healthier while at the same time aid the production of better quality crop for healthy leaving.
