Abstract
In this chapter the authors focus on expectancies. They review research and provide clinical material that demonstrates the power of expectancies in human functioning generally and in psychotherapy in particular. The authors then discuss its place in the major types of psychotherapy and why it tends to be ignored in systematic formulations of these treatments. Next, the authors discuss the treatment implications of taking expectancies seriously. Finally, Weinberger and Eig argue that despite its critical importance to psychotherapy outcome, there is more to psychotherapeutic treatment than expectancies and relate this point to another neglected treatment issue: long-term psychotherapy.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
