Abstract
In this present investigation was aimed to develop rare earth metal ions (REM) based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) namely lanthanum (La3+) and cerium (Ce3+) fabricated benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (BTC) which provides La@BTC and Ce@BTC MOFs for superior fluoride adsorption. The synthesized La@BTC and Ce@BTC MOFs reveal utmost defluoridation capacities (DCs) of 4985 and 4930 mgF− kg−1 respectively. The physicochemical characterization of the synthesized REM based MOFs was explored with XPS, EDAX, FTIR, SEM, XRD, TGA and TEM exploration. The adsorption influencing factors namely initial fluoride ion concentration, shaking time, REM based MOFs dosage, solution pH, temperature and interfering anions were optimized to attain utmost DC in batch scale. Moreover, the thermodynamic parameters, adsorption isotherm, and kinetic experiments were utilized to identify the nature and order of the fluoride adsorption onto synthesized REM based MOFs. The attainable mechanism of fluoride adsorption onto REM based MOFs were mainly governed by complexation and electrostatic adsorption. Besides, the prepared REM based MOFs were reutilized upto six regeneration cycles and it can be easily reused without loss of defluoridation capacity (DC). The results of field trial indicate REM based MOFs diminished fluoride level below the permissible limit.
