We read with interest the paper by Goseki et al. about early stage (superficial) esophageal
carcinoma recently published in Cancer.'We were surprised to note that the 13 references
quoted in this paper concerned exclusively Japanese studies, 12 of which were in Japanese
(only 6 had an abstract in English). Nothing from the extensive and fundamental work on
