Supporting patients to maintain high levels of oral hygiene is one of the fundamental
elements of nursing care. Without proper cleaning, plaque can build up on the surface of
dentures, leading to inflammation and tenderness in the mucous membranes of the mouth.
Denture plaque formation can also lead to an unpleasant taste in the mouth, staining and
periodontal disease. This review therefore offers nurses guidance on best practice for
denture cleaning to avoid the consequences of plaque build-up.
