Abstract
Laser remelting (LR), the most promising method used for surface processing of High entropy alloy (HEA) to improve the surface properties, eliminates pores, cracks and other surface defects present on the surface. The laser remelting process uses high power lasers to melt the surface of alloy to enhance the component life by enhanced wear resistance and microhardness without impacting the bulk material with reduced lead time. High entropy alloy (HEA) is a novel class of material used for wear resistance application. Laser remelting offers various flexibility like control over penetration depth, spot diameter selection, and higher cooling rate attract its deployment in multiple applications such as aerospace, medical and automotive. Among the different sectors, the applications of LR in the wear resistance are increasing at a brisk pace, and the application domain ranges from cladding to repairing to the fabrication of near-net-shaped engineering components. The increasing popularity of LR in the wear resistance application is due to its ability to enhance the surface properties of mechanical components with low lead time. One of the commonly used materials in the wear resistance application is high entropy alloy due to its high entropy of mixing and superior wear resistance at elevated temperature, including high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance. Worldwide, researchers are working on the LR of various high entropy alloy, characterization High entropy alloy Coating Characterization Wear and qualification of different high entropy alloy for wear resistance applications. This chapter introduces the LR process with a detailed description of the LR system, methods and process parameters. The chapter will also describe LR process used for high entropy alloys, explaining the effect of LR process on the microstructure, crystalline property and mechanical properties. In addition, the microstructure and mechanical properties of LR processed HEAs will be compared with pre-processed alloy coating. Further, various applications of LR process in the wear resistance application will be explored using case studies. This chapter will serve as a quick-start for learners to appreciate the improvements with LR technology and as the accumulated reference document for the enthusiastic researcher community.
