Cotrimerization of arynes and electron-deficient alkenes selectively affords
dihydrophenanthrenes or ortho-olefinated biaryls, depending on the catalytic system
employed. Our findings support a mechanism involving benzyne and a
metallacycloheptadiene as key intermediates.
