Much has been learnt about the mechanisms of thymic self‐tolerance induction from work on
both the rare autosomal recessive disease autoimmune polyendocrinopathy candidiasis
ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) and the autoimmune regulator (AIRE) protein mutated in
