This chapter seeks to challenge the mainstream understandings of homelessness by exploring the particular issues faced by asylum seekers who are experiencing housing insecurity or homelessness, and discussing the implications for social work practice. It is vital for social workers to interrogate the discourses through which homelessness and asylum seeking are constructed. A critical social work lens shows us that discourses are crucial to the governing and maintenance of society and, more specifically, how asylum seekers and homelessness are framed and represented. A focus on discourse allows social workers to make sense of how social structures and institutional processes interact with and shape asylum seekers' experiences of homelessness. Not all social workers who work with asylum seekers experiencing homelessness are part of the official asylum system. Social workers engage with people seeking asylum in a range of organisations, including the homelessness sector.
