Spiral ganglion cell (SGC) degeneration following hair cell loss can be prevented by
administration of exogenous neurotrophic factors. Many of these neurotrophic factors, in
particular the neurotrophins brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neurotrophin-3
