Abstract
A total of 850 faecal samples of cattle from eight provinces in Ninevah governorate in Iraq was collected and analysed for the presence of Fasciola gigantica ova (September 2000 to May 2001). Faecal samples were examined using the sedimentation technique. Positive results were observed in 17.41% of the samples. The highest incidence was recorded in samples from the Mosul region (19.82%), followed by Talkaf (18.98%), Hamdanyia (17.72%) and Ba'aj (17.5%). The lowest incidence was observed in faecal samples from Sinjar (4.54%) and Talafar (5.71%). Season affected the prevalence of infection, with the highest incidence observed during spring (25%), followed by winter (18.53%) and autumn (7.11%). Cattle aged three years old and above showed higher rate of infection (21.88%), with females more susceptible to F. gigantica infection (20.37%). The mean dimension of F. gigantica ova was 169.8×96.7 µm.
