Introduction. The reliable and energy-efficient supply of water to population and industry is a current problem all over the world. Solving of this problem is a high priority for society because of perpetual depletion of energy resources and contamination of drinking water. Recently, new technologies have appeared that can greatly contribute to improving the control and monitoring of the quality of water supply systems. They are based on the integration of induction motor drives, programmable logical controllers (PLC), supervisory and data acquisition systems (SCADA), digital signal processors (DSP), wireless sensors, renewable energy sources and modern control theory. The main obstacles to design highly-efficient systems are their complexity, spatial distribution, changeable structure, time-varying parameters and availability of discrete and continuous control actions. Water supply systems developed without taking optimization into account are mainly based on immediately satisfying the growing demand for water of population and industry. As a result, the structure of water supplying networks is not optimal and information about their parameters is incomplete.
