This paper explores the relationships between Electronic Dance Music Culture (EDMC) and religion, meaning and spirituality. It briefly outlines some of the existing work in this area, before presenting evidence of elements of religiosity found in EDMC during my research. A brief explanation of the historical roots of EDMC is followed by an investigation of transcendent experiences, of how these are perceived, of the use of drugs to trigger them, and of how they relate to trance and possession. Evidence from the field of ethnomusicology is discussed in relation to EDMC, as is the way that music and dance interact. The effect of individualisation within postmodernity is discussed, as is EDMC as a ritual technology for social construction, creating community and openness with others. In conclusion, EDMC spirituality is defined and discussed. Within Electronic Dance Music Culture (EDMC) there is no one author. The club is the text, and both the experience of it and its substance are different for each clubber. It is therefore very much a part of postmodernity, and demands a multi-leveled interdisciplinary approach to describe its many facets. An author-based approach is reflected here in ethnographic field study and interviews. The ethnographic study involved long-term participant observation, which has resulted in a presentation one might describe as emic, as I have been a musician, clubber, DJ and event promoter working within club culture since 1991. Insider knowledge of EDMC is important as its illegal elements bring with them secretiveness, EDMC initiates having a greater level of access to all of its activities. However, I have maintained an intellectual distance in this research where possible, in
