In this chapter we present some preliminary observations on the distribution, natural history,
and exploitation of bottlenose dolphins from the Pa-cific coast of South America. The first
records of bottlenose dolphins from Peru and Ecuador were, respectively, a fresh specimen
from Talara (4 34'S) and a skull from Indefatigable Island, Galapagos, secured by the Leon
Mandel Galapagos expedition in 1941 (Hershkovitz, 1963). Hershkovitz (1963) provisionally
