Cytotoxic T and natural killer (NK) cells of the immune system are responsible for controlling
potentially fatal viral infections. Their weaponry includes lethal granules which contain
perforin, a protein capable of forming lytic pores in the membranes of infected cells. Toxicity
is regulated so that the killer cell and the other cells of the body are unaffected. In this
dissertation, I have asked whether other proteins within the granules can regulate the lytic
process.
Abstract
Cytotoxic T and natural killer (NK) cells of the immune system are responsible for controlling potentially fatal viral infections. Their weaponry includes lethal granules which contain perforin, a protein capable of forming lytic pores in the membranes of infected cells. Toxicity is regulated so that the killer cell and the other cells of the body are unaffected. In this dissertation, I have asked whether other proteins within the granules can regulate the lytic process.
