Abstract
The aim of the present study is to analyse differences in family relationships (parental support, family communication, and parental violence) among 1) adolescents rejected by their peer group who are involved in violent behaviours at school (aggressive rejected), 2) adolescents rejected by their peer group who do not participate in violent behaviours at school (non-aggressive rejected), and 3) adolescents who are neither rejected nor aggressive at school (control group). Participants in the study were 843 adolescents aged 11 to 16 years (mean age: 13.7) of whom 47% were boys and 53% girls, studying in four schools of the Valencian Community (Spain). Instruments used were the following: Relational Support Inventory Scale —RSI—, Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale —PACS—, Parental Violence Scale, School Violence Scale, and the Sociometric Questionnaire. The results showed that the aggressive rejected group reported lower parental support, greater use of physical and verbal violence between their parents, as well as more offensive and avoidant family communication compared to the non-aggressive rejected and control groups. Furthermore, the non-aggressive rejected group perceived they received lower parental support in comparison with the control group. These results highlight the role of family relations on adolescent's social interaction in the peer group.
