This working paper reports on the data and findings of the SNSF-research project “Swiss
Metadatabase of Religious Affiliation in Europe (SMRE)”. Eight years ago, the two authors
started with the simple, yet irritating observation that the existing data on religious affiliation
in various European countries frequently showed substantial differences. The SMRE-project
