The objective of this paper is to reconcile two of the facade's functions: 1) the control of solar
radiation as the energy related function and 2) the aesthetical expression on its design. The
approach adopted is to maximise the shading on the facade through an optimisation of its
components. Then, using experimental aesthetics these facade's components are ordered in
such a way as to achieve a harmonious composition. Arid zones of Islamic countries are the
context of this study.
