Objective: To evaluate the association between depressive symptom dimensions and
incident dementia in a community sample of older persons. Methods: Depressive symptoms
at baseline and incident dementia at 3-year follow-up were assessed with the Geriatric
Mental State (GMS)–Automated Geriatric Examination for Computer Assisted Taxonomy in

Methods 1911 non-demented subjects from a population-based study were interviewed with
the GMS-Agecat at baseline and at three-year follow-up. GMS-AGECAT provides diagnoses
of depression and anxiety disorder as well as dementia. Confirmatory factor analysis on the
GMS depression items resulted in an affective and an organic/cognitive symptom dimension.
