This paper discusses recent data from North and South China, Japan, and the Russian Far
East and eastern Siberia on the dating and function of early pottery during the Late
Pleistocene period and shows how reconsiderations are needed for the patterns and
reasons for its emergence and spread. Early pottery typically appears in contexts that,
