This general review paper with 70 references explains the various aspects of membrane
technology for water disinfection. Membrane capabilities for removing bacteria, viruses and
other microorganisms are discussed and advantages are shown. Fouling, which is the main
problem in membrane based water treatment and its control are explained. Finally the
advantages and disadvantages of using membrane for water treatment are summarized.
