… The present work was designed to investigate from the 7th day of life onwards at weekly
intervals the postnatal development of the acidifying capacity of the kidney and its relation to
the acid-base parameters of the blood. These weekly results were also compared to those
found in 8 healthy full-term older infants (mean age 6.5 months), loaded with 2.8 mEq/kg of

Results The factors first to be considered in the origin of late metabolic acidosis are:(1) protein catabolism,(2) weight curve, and (3) net hydrogen ion excretion in relation to the extent of systemic acidosis.
