Abstract
Bones are an essential component for supporting the body, helping in movement, producing blood cells, and storing nutrients and minerals that are essential for their integrity. Bone mass and structure are maintained by a number of factors such as nutritional status, physical activity and mental stress. Bone tissue is composed of osteoblasts which regulate the passage of calcium in to and out of the bone under the influence of hormones and vitamins and make special proteins for stimulation of osteoclasts. Bones also contain osteocytes which come from osteoblasts and are influenced by multiple environmental factors. There is evidence that both brain stress and heart stress can activate bone marrow and predispose to oxidative stress and inflammation with a significant increase in C-reactive proteins. Treatment of osteoporosis by bisphosphonates was associated with a significant decline in CVDs indicating that mechanisms are interrelated.
