Editorial Comment: The authors surveyed patients and parents as well as pediatric
urologists on the use of the semen analysis (SA) to help direct treatment of varicocele. Of
pediatric urologists 48% expressed discomfort in recommending SA to an adolescent or
young adult. Only 13% routinely used SA when managing cases of varicocele. Of the
parents 38% were uncomfortable with the idea of obtaining a semen analysis, as were 16%
of patients, largely due to lack of knowledge about the semen analysis.
