Program comprehension is the main activity of the software developers. Although there has
been substantial research to support the programmer, the high amount of time developers
need to understand source code remained constant over thirty years. Beside more complex
software, what might be the reason? In this paper, I explore the past of program-
comprehension research, discuss the current state, and outline what future research on
program comprehension might bring.
