Over the past 15years, there has been ongoing debate about whether vaginismus can be
differentiated from dyspareunia categorically, dimensionally, or not at all (Reissing, Binik, &
Khalifé, 1999). Despite the fact that the debate on diagnostic distinction continues, a
significant change was made in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of
Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
