The hyperthermophile Pyrococcus furiosus catalyses the hydrogenation of a broad range of
carboxylic acids selectively to the corresponding primary alcohols. Other functional groups
such as isolated CC-double bonds are not touched. The chemoselectivity of the carboxylate
reduction may be directed towards aldehydes by simple medium engineering.
