We examine the association between accounting quality and employee wages. Using US
firms for the period from 1964 to 2012, we document a negative relation between accounting
quality and employee wages. This negative relation is more pronounced for firms with low
cash holdings per employee and for firms with strong labor unions. Overall, the findings are
consistent with the notion that employees demand risk premiums associated with poor
