Abstract
Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is an important environmental impact of mining activities, both ore and coal mines which are oxidized with sulfide minerals. This issue becomes even more important if the handling of acid mine drainage is not carried out properly then it will become a burden during the post-mining period. Materials used in the processing of acid mine drainage are materials that have alkalinity such as limestone but fly ash or coal combustion ash has the potential to have alkalinity levels and so far has only been considered a B3 waste because it can be a contaminant, therefore research is conducted to assess more deeply about the potential use of fly ash as a neutralizing material. In this study, fly ash is used as the main ingredient, this study aims to analyze the content of fly ash for the process of neutralizing acid mine drainage and to assess the characteristics of fly ash related to its contents. This experiment analyzes the content of fly ash with several tests, namely physical tests (particle size distribution, SEM-EDS) and chemical tests (XRF, XRD, static test). The results of this study indicate that fly ash can be used as an alternative acid neutralizing agent because it has a high ANC value of 337.88 kgH2SO4/ton and a low total sulfur content of 0.37%. The value of pH paste and NAG pH shows that fly ash is very reactive and small fly ash grain size indicates that the smaller the grain size, the greater the surface area of the sample for contact with acid mine drainage. This causes the fly ash sample to be more reactive or very easy to react with acid mine water used in the neutralization process. From the results of testing minerals and elements with a content of aluminum oxide, gypsum and minerals containing lime, it is indicated that fly ash has alkalinity.
